Takeaway.com, a website through which customers can order food from thousands of restaurants, has subsidiaries in 10 different countries. As of yesterday, 5 November 2013, payments at three of these subsidiaries can be made in Bitcoin; in The Netherlands, Germany and Austria. From now on everyday food purchases can be payed in Bitcoin in these countries.

The Dutch version of Takeaway.com is Thuisbezorgd.nl (translated: Homedelivered), which is the main channel through which food is ordered in The Netherlands. I translated the press release from Thuisbezorgd:

Press release, 5-11-2013

From today on food order site Thuisbezorgd.nl offers its customers the opportunity to pay in Bitcoins. Hereby are the Dutch restaurants that accept Bitcoins instantly increased by over 5,000 delivery restaurants.

The first Bitcoin transaction ever was done for a pizza delivery. One Laszlo Hanyecz paid ฿10,000 Bitcoins , then only €20 euros, but at the current exchange rate around €1.6 million euros. The pizzas from Thuisbezorgd.nl are cheaper. The price of one Bitcoin is currently somewhere between €170 and €180 euros. To order a pizza, for example €7 euros, the consumer pays about ฿0.04 Bitcoins.

Thuisbezorgd.nl is the first major Dutch website that accepts online payments with Bitcoins. “About 50 % of all orders are paid online. Although the popular iDEAL payment method will not lose it first ranking soon, we certainly welcome more choice for our consumers in this area" said Imad Qutob, marketing manager of the site.

The virtual currency was last weeks world news by the official recognition of the currency by Germany and the ability to withdraw Bitcoins in Canada. A Norwegian student who invested €19 euros in Bitcoins in 2009, saw his capital grow to a current value of more than €600,000 euros or about 85,000 pizzas.

Dutch mainstream media also published the story.
